Why do I need an AED?
For victims of cardiac arrest every minute that passes prior to defibrillation results in a 10% decrease in survival. In response to these alarming time constraints, the American Heart Association (AHA) has advocated a four-point chain of survival for victims of cardiac arrest. That chain includes early access to the victim, early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), early defibrillation with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and early advanced care. Defibrillation with an AED is a key link in that chain.
AED use has proven to be dramatically superior to CPR alone in improving survival for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Defibrillation resets the heart's normal rhythm with an electrical current applied to the chest. If defibrillation is delayed until ambulance personnel arrive, it is frequently too late.
Most AED machines are "fool proof". They are extremely simple to use with proper training. AED's only provide life-saving shocks to the victim when indicated and do not shock the person who is placing the pads on the victim.
